When you need a roadworthy certificate
A certificate of roadworthiness shows a vehicle passed a test at a vehicle testing station. Most private car owners need one when a used vehicle changes hands and the existing certificate is more than 60 days old.
1 point we are still verifying
Late licensing penalties are calculated on eNaTIS under National Road Traffic Regulation 57. We have not yet checked the regulation's wording against an official copy, so KayaDisc does not estimate penalties.

When you need one
Registering a used vehicle after a change of ownership, if the current certificate is older than 60 days.
Registering a new heavy load vehicle (a Road Transport Quality System vehicle).
Renewing the licence of a public transport or heavy load vehicle. Buses renew every six months, because their roadworthiness certificate is valid for six months only.
Test fees we can confirm
Only some provinces set a roadworthy test fee in the same gazette as their licence fees. These are the ones we have verified:
Province
Motorcycle
Other vehicle
Mpumalanga
R58
R110
Western Cape
R90
R198
These are fees for an application for certification of roadworthiness, including the test, at a registering authority. Private testing stations set their own prices, so ask before you book. Add the test to your costs with the vehicle transfer cost calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a roadworthy certificate to sell my car?
The buyer needs one to register a used vehicle if the current certificate is older than 60 days. The government's service page says it is the buyer's responsibility to make sure the vehicle is roadworthy.
Do I need a roadworthy to renew my licence disc?
Not for an ordinary private car. You do if the vehicle is used for public transport or is a heavy load vehicle.
How much does a roadworthy test cost?
Mpumalanga gazettes R110 for a vehicle (R58 for a motorcycle) at a registering authority; Western Cape gazettes R198 for a vehicle (R90 for a motorcycle) at a registering authority. Private testing stations set their own prices, and we have not verified test fees in the other provinces.
